This collection contains the records of the Kansas State Tax Commission. Almost every series consists of bound tax assessments for railroads, telephone, telegraph, private car line, transmission companies, public services, pipeline, and/or express companies with property operating in Kansas. Similar records include assessments and equalization for real estate and personal property. Also in the collection is a correspondence series discussing tax returns and general office matters.

The Kansas Tax Commission was created in 1907 to succeed the Board of Railroad Assessors and the State Board of Equalization. The Tax Commission consisted of three commissioners appointed by the Governor with the advice and consent of the Senate for four-year terms. It constituted the Inheritance Tax Commission in 1917 and the State Board of Appraisers in 1919.
